Philippines pleads for flood aid

Hero drowns after saving dozens

Muelmar Magallanes braved rampaging floods to save more than 30 people, but ended up sacrificing his life in a last trip to rescue a baby girl who was being swept away on a styrofoam box.

Family members and people who Magallenes saved hailed the 18-year-old construction worker a hero today, as his body lay in a coffin at a makeshift evacuation centre near their destroyed Manila riverside village.

"I am going to be forever grateful to Muelmar. He gave his life for my baby. I will never forget his sacrifice," said Menchie Penalosa, the mother of the six-month-old girl whom he carried to safety before being swept away himself.

Magallanes was at home on Saturday with his family when tropical storm Ketsana unleashed the heaviest rains in more than 40 years on the Philippine capital and surrounding areas.

At first the family, long used to heavy rains, paid little attention to the storm.

But Magallanes and his father quickly decided to evacuate the family once they realised the river 800 metres (2,600 feet) away had burst its banks.

With the help of an older brother, Magallanes tied a string around his waist and attached it one-by-one to his three younger siblings, whom he took to higher ground. Then he came back for his parents.

But Magallanes, a strong swimmer, decided to go back for neighbours trapped on rooftops.

He ended up making many trips, and eventually saved more than 30 people from drowning, witnesses and survivors said.

Tired and shivering, Magallanes was back on higher ground with his family when he heard Penalosa screaming as she and her baby were being swept away on the polystyrene box they were using in an attempt to cross the swift currents.

He dived back in after the mother and daughter, who were already a few metres away and bobbing precariously among the debris floating on the brown water.

"I didn't know that the current was so strong. In an instant, I was under water. We were going to die," said Penalosa, her eyes welling with tears and voice choking with emotion.

"Then this man came from nowhere and grabbed us. He took us to where the other neighbours were, and then he was gone," Penalosa said.

Penalosa and other witnesses said an exhausted Magallanes was simply washed away amid the torrent of water.

Neighbours found his body on Sunday, along with 28 others who perished amid Manila's epic flooding. The official death toll stands at 86 but that excludes those recovered in Magallanes' village, called Bagong Silangan.

Standing next to his coffin, Magallanes' parents paid tribute to their son.

"He always had a good heart," said his father, Samuel.

"We had already been saved. But he decided to go back one last time for the girl."

His mother, Maria Luz, wept as she described her son as incredibly brave.

"He saved so many people, but ended up not being able to save himself."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We’ve been in the web design & development industry for some time now and have had a fair share of clients with the wrong expectations of us. We’re not talking about you now darling, we’re talking about another client. Most of the examples here are actually over exaggerated and the prose a tad direct, be warned.

1. We are not your office tech support.

We are web designers. We can’t tell you why your SingNet connection is down or teach you how to configure your email account. Sorry, no. And even though you want to make changes to your website yourself, we are NOT your tech support and will not walk you through setting up your FTP in Dreamweaver or explain what is FTP.

2. We will take “ASAP” with a pinch of salt.

When we ask a client, when the deadline would be for their project. The most common replies are “ASAP” or “by end of the week”. Many times, after we’ve rushed out the design for them, they will take another month to come back to us on the website’s content. Worse still, after all the hard work afterhours and burnt weekend, and we send them the link to review the finished site, they email a week later to say they’ve lost the link and have yet to see the site :-(

3. We are not copy writers.

Some clients just dump us their product brochures and expect that as we develop the website, we will also write their company profile and services for them. We are not your marketing communications department! We are web developers, we write code. Period. We do not know your business, your products and what text you want. Go figure the content up yourself or hire a copy writer!

4. We prefer not to do your website if you think you can do it on your own.

Sometimes, after we reveal our fees during a presentation, certain clients might argue, “What I need is easy, I’m sure you can do it effortlessly, why do you have to charge me so much?” or “I’ve done it before, it only takes a couple hours to do that, why does it have to cost this much?” Well since it’s that easy and fast to do, why don’t you do it yourself? Don’t bother us with your small talk so we can serve others who will need and appreciate our services.

5. We do not design ugly websites.

Your website will not play music, have a Flash intro, have blinking titles and animated logos, or news on a scrolling marquee. These things were cool before 1997? They mostly degrade the image of the website and the user experience. A web designer worth his salt will not recommend you to have any of these things on your corporate website. But if you insist, we will be glad to do it for you as long as you pay :-)

6. We may not appreciate your sense of design.

You hired us to do your website because we are in the industry and know what works and what doesn’t.You don’t see a doctor to tell him what medicine to dispense to you to treat your illness, do you? So please have faith in our design, trust our advice and stop trying to alter our gorgeous layout to make your new website look like your old one! We may not know everything but we sure understand web designing better than you do. If you didn’t think so, why did you hire us in the first place?

7. We are not your business coach.

Many times, we have clients come calling on us and then throw us a brief idea they have up intheir heads and expect us to work magic, kazoo and a money churning website will appear. They don’t even have a firm business model or plan. We are your web consultant, not your business coach. We can give you advice on a system to suit your business objectives but please don’t expect us brainstorm with you on your business idea, we might as well run your business and you can work under us.

8. We are not xxx.org.

No, we are not a non-profit organisation or an initiative by the government to aid startups. Every so often we would have someone knock on our doors to propose a partnership of sorts where we will build their portal for free in exchange for a portion of their online sales. Sorry, we do not like your idea. It’s amazing how 5% of $2000 doesn’t even come close to paying our utilities.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the course of our work, we’ve come across many a bad client, here’s some interesting facts about them:
  • “Get it up quick” attitude, wants to shortcut the project scoping and planning process, wants a website up for the sake of having a website.
  • Has not given thought to the business objectives of the website, what the content should be and how it should be organised (e.g. no sitemap)
  • Describes the web design objectives in a vague descriptive manner like “clean and fun, better than my competitors”, without knowing what the content should be.
  • Small budget, big expectations, unrealistic timeline e.g. “I want a website that is an amalgamation of Ebay and Amazon, to launch by next month, and my budget is $3000″
  • Indecisive, changes mind frequently, requires constant changes to design and content without end because the client has not done initial planning or not sticking to the plan.
  • Unable to make decisions or give approval. Not responsive, does not email or return phone call timely.
  • Expects swift delivery on all requests but does not do the same in delivering content, providing feedbacks, sign-off and approval to the project manager.
  • Does not make payment on time.

Below Re:enact studio

1.50pm

Advice
Checkpoint

Wiki it

The coffee was gooooooood~

Global health catastrophe

Failure to agree a new UN climate deal in December will bring a "global health catastrophe", say 18 of the world's professional medical organisations.

Earlier in the year, The Lancet, together with University College London (UCL), published a major review on the health impacts of climate change.

Some of the headline findings were that rising temperatures are likely to increase transmission of many infectious diseases, reduce supplies of food and clean water in developing countries, and raise the number of people dying from heat-related conditions in temperate regions.

But it also acknowledged some huge gaps in research - for example, that "almost no reliable data for heatwave-induced mortality exist in Africa or south Asia".

Nevertheless, the main conclusion was that in a world likely to have three billion new inhabitants by the second half of this century: "Effects of climate change on health will affect most populations in the next decades and put the lives and wellbeing of billions of people at increased risk".

Written by Lord Michael Jay, who chairs the health charity Merlin, and Professor Michael Marmot of UCL, the editorial argues that there are plenty of "win-win solutions" available.

"A low-carbon economy will mean less pollution. A low carbon-diet (especially eating less meat) and more exercise will mean less cancer, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

"Opportunity, surely, not cost."

第二天老哥就紧张地上线关心 "how's the dinner? so did u guys get along well?"
